Why does there have to be such a big wound on the front of my chest?

As you will have been told, the surgeon needs to make a cut through your chest to reach the heart. There has to be a long wound so that the breastbone can be fully opened to give access to the area. This is due to the complexity of the operation and because the surgeons need a bigger space than just the diseased arteries to work on.
