Valve replacement

There are two types of replacement valve – mechanical valves and tissue valves.
Mechanical valves are made from titanium, pyrolytic carbon and fabric. You will need to take anticoagulant medication for the rest of your life. In some cases you may hear a clicking noise. It is just the sound of the valve working and it is quite normal. It may be more noticeable after exercise or when lying down.

Tissue valves are produced from treated animal tissue (for example, pig or cow valves).

Each type of valve has its advantages and disadvantages. For example, mechanical valves last longer, but you would need to take medication called warfarin for the rest of your life. You would also have to have regular blood tests. Tissue valves do not last as long as mechanical valves, but you may not need to take warfarin for the rest of your life. If you need a replacement valve, the doctor will discuss which type of valve will suit you best.
