Recently we have received a few questions from people taking warfarin. So here are a few important things to remember if you take this medication.
Do not take any over the counter medication, supplements or herbal preparations without first consulting a Pharmacist, Doctor or Anti Coagulation Nurse.
It is also important to check before using any topical preparations (cream, ointment or lotion) for example voltarol as this can affect the INR level.
Do not take aspirin or any medication that contains aspirin unless prescribed by your Doctor.
Limit your alcohol to 2 units a day, any more can be dangerous and affect your INR level.
Keep a record of your INR level and warfarin dose as it is easy to forget.
Talk to your Anti Coagulation Nurse or Doctor before you change your diet in any way; remember you can eat any food in sensible amounts.
Avoid cranberry juice as this is highly concentrated.
If you notice any black motions, pink urine, bleeding gums, bloodshot eyes, excessive bruising and bleeding or blood when coughing please seek medical advice immediately.
If you need any further information please contact us via email or get in touch with your Anti Coagulation Team.
